Product Description

Sucralfate is a gastro-protectant medication designed to battle painful ulcers that can develop in the mouth, throat, esophagus, and intestines of cats and dogs due to many conditions (ex. Cancer and kidney or liver failure). It stops further damage to ulcers, by working together with hydrochloric acid, also known as stomach acid, to create a coating that surrounds the ulcer, and stops ulcers from being further damaged by acids and enzymes that are naturally produced in dogs and cats. Sucralfate also works as a preventive mechanism against ulcers by plugging up any holes in the linings of the esophagus and intestine before ulcers can form, and also stimulates mucus production to absorb the bile acids that can create ulcers. Sucralfate is like a bandage that you can put around your pet's ulcers to help them heal and prevent further damage.

Sucralfate is available in 1 gm scored tablets as well as in 1g/10 ml suspension. The normal dose to small dogs and cats would be 1/4 to 1/2 gram, given every six to eight hours. Medium to large dogs could be administered 1/2 to 1 gram. It is preferable to give the medication on an empty stomach or after 1-2 hours after a meal. Sucralfate is easily soluble in water and this suspension could be easily administered orally using a syringe in animals, which are difficult to pill. The duration of the therapy would greatly depend on the disease condition as well as the response of the animal to the medication.

Sucralfate is the Generic Alternative to Carafate.

Side Effects & Warnings

Sucralfate has not been extensively tested in animals. Stop treatment immediately if allergic reaction occurs. Talk to your veterinarian about any other symptoms.

Sucralfate has proven efficacy in treating ulcers of mouth, esophagus, stomach and intestinal ulcers. It is also found useful in preventing gastritis caused by aspirin like ulcerogenic drugs, and in managing acid reflux disease of esophagus.
