Soloxine is a prescription medication intended for the treatment of hypothyroidism in dogs, and also in cats who have had their thyroid removed. Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormone to maintain a healthy metabolism and energy level.
The ingredient in Soloxine called Levothyroxine sodium is a synthetic hormone that mimics the natural hormone produced by the thyroid, providing effective hormone replacement therapy. Hypothyroidism typically affects middle aged to older dogs.
Key Benefits of Soloxine
- Treats hypothyroidism in dogs
- Regulates energy and metabolism
- Easy to administer
Who's Soloxine For?
Prescribed to dogs and cats who need relief from hypothyroidism.
Soloxine replaces the hormones that the thyroid gland naturally produces, improving energy and metabolism.
Side Effects and Warnings
Do not use if pet has had adrenal gland problems, anemia, diabetes, heart disease, problems with the pituitary gland, or thyrotoxicosis.
Notify your veterinarian of any additional medications your pet is taking, including antidepressants, and before giving any additional prescription, or non-prescription medications, including vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements. Certain medications may reduce the efficacy of Soloxine. Sucralfate (Carafate), or aluminum antacids (Maalox, Mylanta), must be given 4 hours prior, or 4 hours after administering Soloxine, if necessary.
Administer Soloxine to the exact specifications prescribed by your veterinarian. The initial recommended dose is 0.1 mg/10 pounds of body weight twice daily. Dosage adjusted by monitoring the thyroid blood levels of the dog every four weeks until an adequate maintenance dose is established. The usual maintenance dose is 0.1 mg/10 pounds once daily. Soloxine tablets may be administered orally or placed in the food.
