About Levothyroxine Sodium

Levothyroxine is a thyroid hormone medication used in dogs and cats to treat hypothyroidism, or other thyroid conditions due to low circulating thyroid hormone, and usually needs to be given for the entire life span of the animal.

Who's Levothyroxine Sodium For?

  • Treats conditions associated with low circulating thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism), a common disease in middle aged and older pets (where the animal's thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone)
  • Cats may be prescribed for a short period to correct over treatment of hyperthyroidism, or if their thyroid gland was surgically removed

Side Effects and Warnings

  • Some side effects include excessive thirst, large amounts of urine production, increased appetite, personality change, and reduced heat tolerance
  • Consult your veterinarian regarding any allergies your pet may have, and any other side effects of this medication
