Product Description
You want your new kitten to grow into a strong and healthy cat. Kitten Milk Replacer is the answer to feeding orphaned or rejected newborn kittens. It provides all the nutrients they need and has a creamy, delicious taste they'll love. You can also use KMR to boost the nutrient intake for older cats, as well as stressed or ill adult cats.
Does KMR Kitten Replacement Milk Have Lactose?
KMR Kitten Milk Replacer contains the following ingredients:
Dried skimmed milk, casein, vegetable oil, butterfat, corn syrup solids, mono- and diglycerides of edible fat forming acids, lecithin, L-arginine, choline chloride, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, monopotassium phosphate, magnesium sulfate, salt, carrageenan, tricalcium phosphate, dipotassium phosphate, taurine, ferrous sulfate, dicalcium phosphate, ascorbic acid, zinc sulfate, niacinamide, vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, vitamin E supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, potassium citrate, thiamin mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, potassium iodide, vitamin B12 supplement, folic acid, biotin.
Since it has skimmed milk, this kitten milk replacer power has a small amount of lactose in it. However, it is designed to be highly digestible by most kittens. You can use this milk replacer without worry unless your kittens specifically have lactose intolerance.
How Do I Make Kitten Milk Replacer?
You should mix one part of Kitten Milk Replacer powder with two parts of water to reconstitute this product. Use the same measuring device you use for PetAG KMR Kitten Milk powder to measure the water. It is important to note that you should allow your kittens to receive their mother's milk for at least the first 12 days. During this time, the mother cat produces something called colostrum. Colostrum milk gives extra nutrition and temporary immunity that is essential for their overall health. Keep reconstituted KMR in the fridge, and don't make more than you'll need for a day.
How Much KMR Should I Feed My Kitten?
Always make sure you warm the KMR to body temperature before serving. Bringing the reconstituted KMR to room temperature ensures your kittens don't catch a cold! The directions for feeding say that kittens should be served 30ML of reconstituted Kitten Milk Replacer per 115g of body weight. This amount should be divided into equal portions and spread throughout the day. You should note their body weight daily; growing kittens can rapidly gain weight if fed a nutritious diet.
When Should I Stop Giving My Kitten KMR?
You should slowly wean your kittens off of KMR over the course of a few weeks. The first step is actually shifting from feeding using a spoon or dropper to using a saucer. Once your kittens are old enough to lap, begin giving KMR in a saucer to get them used to this mode of feeding. Approximately when they are six weeks old, you can start weaning them off KMR by mixing it with KMR Kitten Weaning Food. If you are unsure at any point during feeding, consult your veterinarian.
Can I Make Kitten Formula at Home?
You can make kitten formula at home using KMR Kitten Milk Replacement powder. It contains all the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients needed in a pattern similar to mother's milk. It is a huge help when taking care of orphaned or rejected kittens to get all the vitamins and minerals they need before they are gradually switched to solid food. Kittens already on solid food can be advised to have some of this if they are undernourished.
What Can I Use If I Don't Have a Kitten Milk Replacer?
It is best that you find a way to purchase or acquire Kitten Milk Replacer as soon as possible. However, in the interim, you can use whole goat's milk in cases of emergencies. Goats milk shouldn't be used long term as it contains perfect nutrition for baby goats, not baby cats. Recipes online also use evaporated milk or whole milk mixed with egg yolks as an emergency option. Keep in mind that using egg yolks is risky, and you can end up doing more harm than good. It is in your kitten's best interests to get a Kitten Milk Replacer as soon as you can.
How Long Do Kittens Need Milk Replacer?
Kittens generally have milk till they are 6-7 weeks old. After that, they slowly wean off liquid food and start having solid food. Cats are obligate carnivores, so they require a high amount of protein. Much more, in fact, than dogs. This is one of the reasons why they transition so quickly off milk.
Can You Overfeed a Kitten?
Yes, you can absolutely overfeed a kitten. In fact, since kittens don't stop eating when they are full, it can be pretty easy to overfeed a kitten. Stick to 30ML of milk replacer per 115g of body weight and divide portions for each feeding from the total amount. You shouldn't feed your kitten more than this as you could cause gastric distress and obesity.
